Car maintenance for girls: getting started

Our new ‘how to’ series will help you with the basic checks to keep your car running smoothly.

Car maintenance isn’t rocket science – although the way some mechanics gravely shake their heads when you ask for a quote, you’d think it was.

Traditionally it’s been male territory to tinker with the car, but it’s good to have a grasp of the basics to ensure your vehicle is kept in good working order. Our new how-to mini-series for girls (and boys!) is here to help beginners get started.

In this series, you will also find step-by-step instructions on:

You can also read more on car maintenance checks and what they involve here, as well as what it takes to become a more skilled DIY mechanic.

Consider, also, investing in a manual for your particular car (ensure you select the correct year and model). This will give you specific information on how to keep your car well maintained. Always check the manual before completing any general maintenance, as variances do occur between models (with tyre pressures, for instance). And if you are not sure of any procedure, then visit your mechanic or local garage.

As well as making sure car fluids and tyre pressures are at the correct levels, always keep an eye on the dashboard for warning lights and don’t ignore them.

Even with a basic knowledge of car maintenance, it’s still important to have your car regularly serviced as this will ensure your motor holds its value.

And if you want extra peace of mind while you’re out on the road, why not take out Privilege breakdown cover or update it with your renewal quote.
