The benefits of joining a car
enthusiasts’ club
If your car is more to you than merely a means of getting from A to B, you are not alone. Unbounded enthusiasm for the automobile is not restricted to owners of classic beauties such as E-type Jaguars and MGs or lovingly-restored 2CVs and Morris Minors. Whatever car you drive, the chances are there is a car club you can join. A quick search on Google reveals a plethora of such groups.
More than a car club
Far from being an insular group of ‘petrolheads’ spending hours under a bonnet discussing engine specifications and performance histories of a particular model, car clubs are more about belonging to a community. It is a perfect networking opportunity and an enjoyable way to widen your circle of friends.
In some cases, the Citroën 2CV Club for example, members promote owning a certain car as a way of life. 2CV-Club members typically span several generations – people often meet their future partners at one of the events, have children and continue to come to meetings as families, developing lifelong friendships along the way.
Expand your horizons
With meetings and rallies throughout the year, especially in the summer months, being a member of a car club could solve the perennial problem of finding a holiday with a difference. Some events, such as technical and racing meetings focus on the cars, while others are purely social. As the events take place in different locations throughout the UK, across Europe and as far afield as Australia, you will also discover new places. Often they are beautiful regions you would not normally think about visiting – for example, one Citroën meeting this summer (2008) is in the cathedral city of Angoulême in south-west France.
Expert advice for all
Being a member of a car club will make looking after your vehicle a pleasure rather than a chore. Some meetings are dedicated to one aspect of motoring. For example, there may be a series of technical weekends, which give owners the opportunity to receive tuition on the maintenance and repair of their vehicles.
Take advantage of these specialised events to swap motoring experiences with other members, who will also give you advice on how to keep your vehicle in excellent shape. New owners of classic cars that need extra care will find this particularly helpful. As well as trade secrets from specialists and experts, you will learn how to maintain and repair your vehicle.
Stay informed
Most car clubs regularly send members a dedicated magazine too, with news and information on where to get the best deal on spare parts, lists of specialist garages that are, for example, Jaguar-friendly. Car clubs are also an ideal place to find out about the history of your vehicle (if it is an older or classic model) and share your enthusiasm with others. Owners tend to embrace the quirks particular to their vehicle – for example 2CVs were designed in such a way that a French peasant farmer could drive in one across a ploughed field with a box of eggs without breaking them!
Joining a car club will not only put you in contact with like-minded souls to share your love of motoring, but may also open up a whole new world of adventures… What ever car you drive, see just how much money you could save with Privilege car insurance.
