Privilege’s guide to DIY car valeting
Protect your investment and have a more pleasant drive by giving your vehicle a bonnet-to-boot makeover – with top tips from car valet experts
Professional car valets, such as New Again and Auto Valet Direct, have made a business out of making cars and vans spick and span. Follow their lead by carrying out a DIY car valet.
Foam up
Keep a can of upholstery foam cleaner in the car. It’s great for quickly mopping up stains and spillages, cleaning greasy hands or getting rid of bird droppings from your paintwork.
Microfibre cloths
Used slightly damp, these are ideal for cleaning seats as you don’t need to use any chemical products that could harm leather or fabric.
Airbag alert
Computerised car components that control windows or airbags can be damaged by water, so don’t spray cleaning products directly onto your dashboard.
Brush up
A paintbrush is a vital tool for dusting interior trim, cleaning air vents, the steering wheel and button switches. It can also help remove excess wax and polish residue from the exterior of your car.
Wax on
The impact from insects can score and even chip paintwork. Waxing the car will help, but if you don’t have time to do it all, just do the front.
Wash regularly
Give your car a thorough cleaning at least every few weeks. Always use water with a good-quality car shampoo, work from the roof down and never rub cloths or sponges over dry dirty bodywork as they could scratch glass or paint.
Wash when cool
Try to avoid washing your car in direct sunlight because smears will be left on the bodywork as the water dries. A high-pressure hose is best for rinsing.
When you wash your car, it’s also advisable to do basic vehicle maintenance. And make sure to service your car at regular intervals.
