Bring a little sunshine into your home
If you’re fed up with the growing cost and harmful environmental impact of coal and nuclear energy, then you may well be looking for ways to introduce renewable energy sources into your home.
The easiest way would be to switch to an electricity supplier that uses energy from wind, solar or hydropower sources. But if you’re thinking big, and you’re willing to make an investment now to reap the long term benefits, there are a number of systems you can install to generate your own natural energy (just remember to check that your house insurance covers the new equipment for loss or damage).
- Solar panels are probably the first things that spring to mind when you think about making your own renewable energy. According to Sun Renewables Ltd, the sun transmits more energy to the earth’s surface in one hour, than humankind uses in one year. And as the cost of buying and installing solar panels has started to come down, it could be a good long-term option.
- Love them or loathe them, wind turbines are popping up all across the country, and used in the right location they can generate clean, renewable energy. For the majority of us, even a small turbine is not a viable option, but if you have plenty of land and it’s not too sheltered it’s possible to generate power from your own small turbine.
- The Ground source heat pump is an emerging technology you may have seen used on property development shows like Grand Designs. Because ground temperature remains a constant temperature of 10-140C below the surface, ground source pumps can deliver underground heat into your home all year round.
Whatever route to renewable energy you decide to take, make sure that your investment is covered with adequate house insurance. For full details of Privilege’s Standard and Platinum cover, you can read our House Insurance Policies online.
