Blame it on the Weatherman
A few hours before the Great Storm of 1987 broke, the now infamous BBC Weatherman Michael Fish said during a forecast: "Earlier on today, apparently, a woman rang the BBC and said she heard there was a hurricane on the way... well, if you're watching, don't worry, there isn't!". That evening, the worst storm to hit South East England since 1703 caused record damages.
Privilege buildings insurance covers all the major risks, which includes storms or floods and lightening damage. For full details of standard and Platinum cover, you can read our Privilege Home Insurance Policies online.
Being prepared is the key to minimising the damage a storm can cause. Having sound buildings insurance in place is essential, but there are a number of things you can do to reduce the impact of severe weather:
- As soon as a severe weather warning is issued for your area, make sure any shed doors are secured and any garden furniture or bikes are put away. Check around the garden for anything that could be lifted by a strong wind and cause damage.
- Keep on top of your home maintenance, check your roof for loose tiles and make sure drains and guttering are clear of leaves and other debris. They need to be in good condition to withstand heavy rain, strong winds or lightening.
- When bad weather has passed, if your home has been affected take photographs of the damage to your property and possessions for your insurer.
So make sure you’re properly covered with buildings insurance and contents insurance and get a quote today. Because if you’re underinsured, you can’t blame that on the weatherman!
