Home security advice
Here are our top 10 tips for securing your home:
-
Fit deadlocks or key-operated security bolts to all external doors.
-
Fit an approved alarm, and you may get a discount on your home insurance. For a good quality alarm, look for an NSI or SSAIB accredited company.
-
Fit key-operated metal locks to all your windows. Burglars can't open them and know that breaking a window will attract attention.
-
Never leave keys in a lock or in a hiding place, such as under a pot or doormat -thieves know where to look.
-
Check a callers identity before opening your door fully. Don't be fooled by a uniform; check the identity card and telephone their office if in doubt. A door chain or viewer will also help you see who's calling.
-
Lock your garden tools and ladders away. Leaving them lying around could invite burglars to use them to break into your home.
-
If you're away, cancel the milk and newspapers. Ask a friend or neighbour to keep an eye on your house and remove any mail, especially if you have a glass door.
-
Use a timer to turn on the lights when you're out.
-
Security mark your valuables with your postcode and photograph them if possible – it makes recovering them much easier.
-
If you need any help, ask your local Crime Prevention Officer to visit your home
