Home improvement advice
Below are our home improvement tips for:
-
Window dressing
A window with plain curtains or blinds can be just a flat, square shape, or you can add interest with a simple drape or valance. A remnant of fabric can be pinned or tacked to the top of the frame, perhaps with a fringed or scalloped edge, or just draped casually over a simple dowel. -
Screen saver
Hollow-core doors or shutters from a DIY store can be simply hinged together and brightly painted to make a stylish folding screen, to create privacy, break up a room or hide clutter. -
French lessons
Here’s one that really works: Attach a plain, full length mirror to a door and, using wooden moulding from a DIY store, or simply using masking tape, create glazing bars to give the effect of a French door. It really adds light and space to a room. -
Flooring fun
If your wooden floorboards aren’t posh enough to stain and polish, consider coloured floor paint. There’s a range of colours available, and a stencilled border really could add the ‘wow’ factor. -
Summer daze
Summer’s the time to bring the outdoors – indoors! Wicker or bamboo furniture brings a touch of the garden to a sunny room, and if fresh flowers every day are too posh for you, floral patterned cushions and throws can have the right effect. -
Cool fireplaces
Here’s another summer idea: If you have a fireplace that’s not in use, clean it out and arrange fresh logs – or driftwood if you’re near the beach. Then, balance a few tealights on top of the wood – they give a charming glow when lit, without the heat of the fire! -
Bathroom ahoy!
If your bathroom is a bit ‘blah, blah’, navy blue and white is a great colour scheme. Start by painting the ceiling navy blue – looks great with downlighters or a bright white central spotlight bulb – and choose navy and white wallpaper, bright and crisp. Matching towels, accessories and ornaments add to the nautical effect.
