Gardening tips and advice

Below are our top tips and advice for your garden:

  • Give me air
With the exception of wall-climbing plants, don’t plant too close to a wall or fence. Plants need air to circulate, and without it, fungal disease can run riot. Think about how big the mature plant will be.
  • Mind the gap
If you’re planting a row of plants, always plant a couple of extras nearby. That way, if one plant in the row fails to thrive, you can avoid unsightly gaps by replacing the troubled plant.
  • Stay on the level
If your garden slopes steeply, always create a level planting area for each plant. If you plant on a slope, rainwater will run off too quickly, causing erosion and preventing the plant from getting enough water.
  • Check out the shades
Most gardens have areas of permanent or semi-permanent shade. Before you plant your garden, monitor the times when each area gets full sunlight or shade. Most sun-loving plants can grow with as little as three or four hours of sun, but most shade-loving plants can only handle an hour or two of direct sun.
  • Mind how you strim
String trimmers are a threat to trees and shrubs, and also to turf. Don’t ‘strim’ grass too short, as the roots can be damaged, and don’t go too close to trees, especially young ones, as the bark can be damaged, which could be fatal.
  • Clear up after the kids
Kids’ paddling pools, tents, toys, bikes and furniture left on the lawn overnight, or during a patch of bad weather, can cause unsightly and long-lasting damage to the turf. Get the little blighters to put everything away before bedtime!

Remember – you don’t have to be posh to have a nice garden!
